Coil Building 101

Coil Building 101

Learn the fundamentals of building your own coils for rebuildable atomizers.

Tools You'll Need

  • Coil jig or screwdriver set
  • Wire cutters (flush cutters preferred)
  • Ceramic tweezers
  • Ohm reader
  • Cotton (Japanese organic recommended)

  • Wire Types

    Kanthal A1

  • Most beginner-friendly
  • Works in wattage mode only
  • 24-26 gauge for single coil, 26-28 for dual

  • Stainless Steel 316L

  • Works in wattage AND temperature control
  • Faster ramp-up than Kanthal
  • Clean flavor

  • Nichrome 80

  • Fastest heat-up time
  • Lower resistance per wrap
  • Not for temp control

  • Basic Round Wire Build

    Simple 6-wrap coil (Kanthal 24g, 3mm ID):

    1. Cut ~10cm of wire

    2. Wrap around 3mm coil jig 6 times

    3. Trim excess leads

    4. Install in RDA/RTA posts

    5. Pulse at low wattage to check hot spots

    6. Strum with ceramic tweezers

    7. Final resistance: ~0.5Ω

    Wicking Technique

    1. Cut cotton strip (~6mm wide for 3mm coil)

    2. Twist one end to threading point

    3. Feed through coil

    4. Trim ends at deck edge

    5. Tuck into juice wells

    6. Prime with e-liquid

    7. Let sit 5 minutes before first hit

    Safety Checklist

    ✓ Check resistance before firing
    ✓ Ensure coil doesn't touch cap/deck
✓ Start at low wattage (20-30W)
    ✓ Watch for hot spots
✓ Verify battery can handle the load

Most comprehensive battery safety guide I've found. The Ohm's law examples are perfect.

Shared this with my entire vape shop. Should be required reading for anyone using external batteries.

Great info. Would love to see more about parallel vs series configurations.

Excellent guide! I'd add that rewrapping batteries is cheap and easy with a heat gun.

Please emphasize more that damaged batteries should NEVER be used. Seen too many accidents.

What about built-in battery mods? Do these same rules apply?
